Job description: Department Overview:The Senior Clinical Research Assistant is a highly organized and motivated position that will support multiple elements of human subject research projects supported by grants from the Veterans Affairs (VA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other foundations to improve Veteran engagement with VA and non-VA healthcare systems, improve the health care culture, healthcare relationships, medical decision-making, clinician-patient communication, and healthy behaviors. Duties include:
  • Preparing documentation for grant and IRB applications, including contributing to writing the application, filling out necessary forms, gathering letters of reference, and creating the research budget
  • Contacting patients to recruit for research projects, explain study objectives, and conduct initial questionnaires or interviews
  • Communicate effectively and empathetically with patients and staff from diverse backgrounds
  • Coding transcripts for analysis using specialized software
  • Conducting analysis of qualitative and quantitative research data
  • Write research papers for publication, as well as edit papers written by Principal Investigators and other team members, as well as submitting these papers to journals for publication in scholarly journals
  • Supervise and maintain organized and accurate study records
  • Independently develop and maintain electronic databases and assist in data transfers
  • Independently review and supervise review of medical records
  • Assist team of RAs in transcription and input written and recorded data into a database
  • Work with Principal Investigator to support junior Research Assistants with regard to transcription and input of written and recorded data into a database and the scheduling of patient visits Schedule participant
  • Strong interpersonal and critical thinking skills for independent problem solving are needed to achieve scientific and administrative objectives.
The Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine provides expert diagnosis and care of patients with lung diseases in our Pulmonary Clinic, and of critically ill patients in our Intensive Care Unit. Function/Duties of Position:
  • Recruiting patients for research projects, explaining study objectives, and conducting initial questionnaires. Communicating effectively and empathetically with patients and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Write research papers for publication, edit papers written by PIs and other team members; submit for publication in scholarly journals.
  • Preparing documentation for grant and IRB applications, including writing, gathering forms and letters of reference, and creating a research budget.
  • Administrative tasks including IRB submissions and compliance, as well as coordinating patient visit scheduling. Coordinating data transfers for independent researchers.
  • Reviewing medical records to gather research data, assisting Research Assistants with regards to transcription and input of written and recorded data into databases.
  • Coding transcripts for analysis using specialized software, conducting analysis of qualitative and quantitative research data, keeping organized and detailed research records, independently developing and maintaining electronic databases.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:Bachelor's Degree in Social Sciences AND 1 year of relevant experience;OR Associate's Degree in relevant field AND 3 years of relevant experience;OR 4 years of relevant experience;OR Equivalent combination of training and experienceQualitative and quantitative research methodsParticipant recruitment and participation in studiesConducting surveys and questionnairesPreparing grant applications and IRB applicationsMicrosoft Word, Excel, & PowerPointEndNote or RefWorksSPSS, Stata, R-Studio, Atlas.tiQualtricsAuthored and published at least one publication in a scholarly journal, scholarly book, or similar periodical. Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience: 2+ years of experience in research focused on Veterans, Military, or First Responders
Additional Details:The schedule for this position will require flexibility depending on protocols, but will be Monday-Friday. The office location will be at the VA Portland Health Care System, Health Services Research Building (Bldg 6). No travel is expected.
