OverviewSENIOR TECHNICAL WRITER (NAUT):Bowhead seeks a Senior Technical Writer to support our customer on the Nautical contract in the Arlington, VA area. This position serves as the lead documentation specialist for complex DoD systems undergoing cloud migration, responsible for creating, maintaining, and managing comprehensive technical documentation that meets stringent government standards.ResponsibilitiesLead the development and maintenance of comprehensive technical documentation suites including system specifications, user manuals, installation guides, and operational proceduresManage and coordinate documentation projects across multiple concurrent cloud migration initiativesEstablish and enforce documentation standards, style guides, and quality assurance processesConduct complex technical interviews with subject matter experts, engineers, and system administrators to gather detailed informationCreate and maintain documentation templates, standards, and best practices for the organizationReview and edit technical documents produced by junior staff, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and complianceCollaborate with cross-functional teams including developers, system architects, and project managers to ensure documentation alignment with project objectivesDevelop and implement documentation management systems and workflowsProvide mentoring and professional development guidance to junior technical writing staffCoordinate with government customers to understand documentation requirements and delivery expectationsManage documentation version control systems and ensure proper configuration managementCreate visual aids, diagrams, flowcharts, and other graphical elements to enhance technical documentationDevelop and deliver training materials and presentations for various audiencesEnsure all documentation meets DoD standards, security classification guidelines, and accessibility requirementsParticipate in design reviews, technical meetings, and project planning sessionsManage documentation budgets, schedules, and resource allocationStay current with emerging documentation technologies, tools, and industry best practicesCoordinate with information security personnel to ensure proper handling of classified informationInterface with the customer and external stakeholders in working groups, technical exchange meetings, and other forumsChair/co-chair meetings and working groups on behalf of government representatives as directedResolve problems, allocate resources, manage personnel, and monitor performance to meet contract requirementsProvide daily control and supervision of employeesProvide planned replacement information at least 15 calendar days prior to replacementProvide information within 24 hours of an unplanned replacementOther duties as assignedQualificationsBachelor's degree in English, Technical Writing, Communications, Computer Science, or related field from an accredited institution, or 15+ years of progressive experience in technical writing in lieu of degreeMinimum of 10+ years of progressive experience in technical writing, preferably in government or DoD environmentsMinimum of 3+ years of experience managing technical writing teams and complex documentation projectsExtensive experience with documentation management systems, version control, and configuration managementAdvanced proficiency in technical writing tools including Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and documentation platformsStrong understanding of software development lifecycle, system architecture, and cloud computing conceptsProven leadership experience managing technical writing teams and complex documentation projectsExcellent project management skills with ability to handle multiple concurrent deliverablesDeep knowledge of DoD documentation standards, style guides, and regulatory requirementsExperience with XML, HTML, and other markup languages used in technical documentationStrong analytical skills with ability to quickly understand complex technical systemsCERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:Required: IAT Level II certification (Security+, GSEC, SSCP, CCNA Security, or GCIH)Desired: PMP, technical writing certifications, or relevant cloud technology certificationsPhysical Demands:Must be able to lift 25 pounds on occasion.Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged period amounts of time.Must be able to twist, bend, and squat periodically.SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to maintain a security clearance at the Top Secret level with SCI eligibility and maintain SAP eligibility.
