Medical Underwriter - Remote in Central Time Zone

As a Medical Underwriter, you will learn to analyze new business health insurance applications in order to assess risk of future claims for Our Company at an experienced level position. You must be an experienced medical underwriter, trainable to learn our in-house guidelines and systems, self-motivated, able to work independently, confident in making your own decisions, have the ability to analyze medical information, work well with other team members, communicate effectively orally and written.

This position is exempt/salary full-time (40 hours/week) Monday - Friday. Candidate must reside in Central Time Zone. Employees are required to work normal business hours of 8am-6pm Thursdays and 8am-5pm Monday through Wednesday & Friday. Thursdays employees will be required to work 8am-6pm. It may be necessary, given the business need, to work overtime or weekends.

If you are located in Central time zone, you will have the flexibility to work remotely* as you take on some tough challenges.

    Primary Responsibilities
  • Assess Medical Risk for the Company
  • Review/Analyze Evidence of Insurability and determine appropriate course of action (e.g., request requirements, approve, rate, decline)
  • Review/Analyze medical history of relevant populations (e.g., medical applications, APS, exams, claims history) to correctly and completely identify medical risk or potential increased risk of morbidity or mortality
  • Apply appropriate medical underwriting criteria to determine insurability, based upon in-house underwriting guidelines
  • Communicate decisions/outcomes to applicable audiences (e.g., employer, applicant, agent, internal business partner)
  • Responding to internal and external queries regarding application submissions
  • Completing additional tasks and special projects as needed
  • Complete an average of 80 files per day

    Required Qualifications
  • 2+ years of experience working specifically as an individual (not group) health insurance underwriter
  • Experience working as a telecommuter
  • Proficiency in medical terminology, prescription name/usage, vendor systems (e.g., MIB, Milliman, ExamOne) and ability to learn our in-house system
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word (updating/editing workbooks), Outlook (receiving/sending emails) and TEAMs
  • Proven effective analytical and problem-solving skills, sound judgement, solid decision-making ability and confidence to make difficult decisions
  • Proven to adhere to attendance policy
  • Willing and able to work full-time 8am-6pm CT Thursdays, 8am-5pm CT Monday through Wednesday & Friday
  • Reside in the Central time zone

  • Reside within Central Time Zone
  • Required to have a dedicated work area established that is separated from other living areas and provide information privacy
  • Ability to keep all company sensitive documents secure
  • Must live in a location that can receive a UnitedHealth Group approved high-speed internet connection or leverage an existing high-speed internet service

The salary range for this role is $49,300 to $96,400 annually based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
