Position Overview

The Hydrodynamics team in the Drive and Propulsion Engineering Department at Mercury Marine is seeking an experienced Propeller Design Engineer to design and develop propellers for Mercury Outboards, Mercruiser Sterndrive engines, and Mercury high-speed diesel marine engines. As a Propeller Design Engineer, you will be responsible for propeller design and development, updating design methodology, as well as creating and integrating design tools. We are looking for creative and ambitious candidates with a passion for boating and propulsion to join our team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop propeller geometry to meet performance and durability requirements
  • Acquire prototype hardware for testing and validation
  • Develop test procedures to evaluate propeller performance and durability
  • Evaluate propeller performance and durability through experimental and numerical methods
  • Predict and correlate vessel performance characteristics using computational models and simulations
  • Create technical reports of design and test results to communicate findings to stakeholders
  • Develop design standards to guide future project work and improve overall design efficiency

Qualifications and Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need to possess a combination of education, experience, and skills. The minimum requirements include:

  • Minimum B.S. Degree in Naval Architecture, Aerospace Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience in mechanical engineering, fluid mechanics, and computational science
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Knowledge of at least one popular programming language (e.g., Python, C++, MATLAB, FORTRAN, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:

  • M.S. Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Naval Architecture, or a related field
  • Engineering experience working with propeller design or similar applications
  • Strong knowledge of flows around hydrofoils and propeller theory (lifting line method, panel method, etc.)
  • Experience with computational fluid mechanics (Ansys-Fluent, STAR-CCM+)
