Why United Airlines? – A Visionary Journey in Aviation and Cybersecurity

At United Airlines, we are more than an airline; we are a catalyst for connection, an engine of global mobility, and a trailblazer in digital safety. With a fleet that spans continents and an employee family that touches every corner of the sky, United has a responsibility to protect the data, privacy, and trust of millions of passengers each day. Our Cybersecurity and Digital Risk (CDR) team is on a mission to embed security into the very DNA of every flight, maintenance routine, and customer interaction. As we chart a course toward becoming the safest and most innovative airline in history, we need visionary technology leaders who can sculpt the future of Operational Technology (OT) security.

Role Overview – Principal Architect, Operational Technology (OT) Cybersecurity (Remote)

We are seeking a seasoned, forward‑thinking Principal Architect to lead the design, development, and continuous improvement of United’s OT cybersecurity program. This is a fully remote position that offers flexibility, autonomy, and the chance to influence a global aviation giant’s security posture. In this role, you will act as the strategic architect and trusted advisor, partnering with product, platform, engineering, and operations teams to ensure that every OT system—from aircraft avionics to ground support infrastructure—is defended against evolving threats.

Key Responsibilities – Building a Secure OT Future

  • Strategic Leadership: Define and champion the long‑term OT security vision, translating United’s business objectives into robust, scalable security architectures and roadmaps.
  • Policy & Procedure Excellence: Create, maintain, and continuously enhance OT security policies, standards, and procedures, ensuring alignment with industry best practices and regulatory mandates.
  • Reference Architectures & Patterns: Collaborate with cross‑functional partners to develop detailed reference architectures, design patterns, and security blueprints for PLCs, SCADA, DCS, and emerging IoT devices.
  • Metrics & Maturity Tracking: Design and implement a comprehensive metrics program to monitor the maturity, health, and effectiveness of OT security controls over time.
  • Risk Communication & Mitigation: Proactively identify, articulate, and mitigate security risks, delivering clear, actionable insights to senior leadership and operational teams.
  • Stakeholder Partnership: Serve as a trusted advisor to division leaders, engineers, and external vendors, fostering collaboration and ensuring security considerations are embedded early in project lifecycles.
  • Technology Strategy & Roadmap: Lead the evaluation, acquisition, and integration of cutting‑edge OT security technologies, including automation tools, threat intelligence platforms, and incident response solutions.
  • Regulatory & Standards Alignment: Ensure all OT initiatives comply with frameworks such as NIST, ISO 27002, IEC 62443, and relevant aviation safety regulations.
  • Continuous Improvement: Conduct regular gap analyses, scenario‑based assessments, and tabletop exercises to refine security playbooks and response procedures.
  • Talent Development: Mentor junior security engineers, fostering a culture of learning and expertise in OT cybersecurity across the organization.

Essential Qualifications – The Core Foundations

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive technical experience, with a strong blend of OT, Network Operations Center (NOC), and general IT expertise.
  • Hands‑on experience securing operational technologies such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, and Distributed Control Systems (DCS).
  • Deep understanding of information security principles, risk management methodologies, and security program development.
  • Solid grasp of IT and OT network communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, OPC-UA, MQTT, TCP/IP).
  • U.S. work authorization without the need for sponsorship.
  • Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.

Preferred Qualifications – The Distinguishing Edge

  • Master’s degree or equivalent advanced training in Computer Science, Engineering, Cybersecurity, or Data Science.
  • Over 10 years of technical experience, with at least 6 years dedicated specifically to OT security.
  • Proficiency with security frameworks and standards such as ISO 27002, NIST SP 800‑53, IEC 62443, and CIS Benchmarks.
  • Experience with security automation, scripting (Python, PowerShell), and orchestration tools.
  • Prior experience in highly regulated industries—particularly aviation, aerospace, or transportation.
  • Industry certifications (CISSP, CISM, GICSP, or equivalent) are a strong plus.

Key Skills & Competencies – What Makes You Successful

  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to translate business goals into technical security strategies that scale across a global enterprise.
  • Technical Depth: Expertise in OT security architecture, threat modeling, vulnerability management, and incident response.
  • Communication Excellence: Skilled at presenting complex security concepts to diverse audiences, from board‑level executives to frontline engineers.
  • Collaboration & Influence: Proven track record of influencing cross‑functional teams and driving consensus on security decisions.
  • Problem‑Solving Agility: Comfortable navigating ambiguous environments and developing innovative solutions under pressure.
  • Leadership & Mentoring: Passion for developing talent, sharing knowledge, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
