About Summit Academy North – A Legacy of Innovation and Student Success

Welcome to Summit Academy North, a vibrant and forward‑thinking learning community proudly serving the Romulus, Michigan area for over two decades. Our campus, home to more than 1,200 enthusiastic learners ranging from preschool through twelfth grade, thrives on a culture of collaboration, creativity, and continuous improvement. As a member of the Wayne Regional Educational Service Agency (Wayne RESA), we are dedicated to providing high‑quality, inclusive education that prepares every student to reach their highest potential.

Our commitment to excellence is reflected in our award‑winning mentorship programs, extensive professional development opportunities, and a robust portfolio of extracurricular activities—including band, music, athletics, and after‑school enrichment. At Summit Academy North, teachers and support staff enjoy a family‑friendly environment, modern facilities, and the freedom to innovate within the classroom. We are now seeking a compassionate, energetic, and results‑driven Behavior Intervention Specialist who will join our team and help shape the next generation of learners.

Why This Role Is Unique – The Hybrid Flexibility You’ve Been Looking For

In today’s dynamic educational landscape, flexibility matters. This position blends the convenience of remote work with the impact of on‑site interaction, allowing you to balance your professional responsibilities with personal commitments. While a portion of your responsibilities will be performed from a comfortable home office—leveraging technology to conduct virtual consultations, data analysis, and collaborative planning—you will also spend meaningful time on campus, directly supporting students, teachers, and families.

Key Responsibilities – Making a Real Difference Every Day

  • Individualized Behavior Support: Conduct comprehensive functional behavior assessments (FBAs) for students exhibiting challenging behaviors and develop evidence‑based behavior intervention plans (BIPs) tailored to each learner’s unique needs.
  • Collaborative Consultation: Partner with classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, and school administrators to integrate behavioral strategies into daily instruction, ensuring consistency across all learning environments.
  • Data‑Driven Monitoring: Collect, analyze, and interpret behavioral data to track progress, adjust interventions, and report outcomes to stakeholders, including parents and district officials.
  • Professional Development: Design and deliver workshops, webinars, and coaching sessions—both in‑person and virtual—on positive behavior support, de‑escalation techniques, and inclusive classroom practices.
  • Crisis Intervention: Serve as a first responder during behavioral crises, utilizing de‑escalation strategies, safety protocols, and restorative practices to ensure the well‑being of all involved.
  • Family Engagement: Communicate regularly with families to share progress, provide training on behavior management at home, and foster a collaborative partnership that supports student success.
  • Program Evaluation: Contribute to the continuous improvement of the school’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework by reviewing program effectiveness and recommending enhancements.
  • Documentation & Compliance: Maintain accurate records in accordance with state and federal regulations, including IDEA, Section 504, and local district policies.

Essential Qualifications – The Foundation of Your Success

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, School Psychology, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), or a closely related field. A master’s degree is highly preferred.
  • Certification: Valid Michigan teaching certification or an equivalent state credential in special education/behavioral support. Board‑Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification is a strong plus.
  • Experience: Minimum of two years of direct experience providing behavior intervention services in a K‑12 setting, with demonstrated success in developing and implementing BIPs.
  • Technical Proficiency: Comfortable using data‑tracking software, virtual meeting platforms (Zoom, Microsoft Teams), and school information systems.
  • Legal Knowledge: Familiarity with IDEA, Section 504, and Michigan’s Special Education regulations.
  • Communication Skills: Exceptional written and oral communication abilities, with a talent for translating complex data into clear, actionable recommendations.

Preferred Qualifications – What Sets Exceptional Candidates Apart

  • Advanced degree (M.Ed., M.A.) in Special Education, Educational Psychology, or Applied Behavior Analysis.
  • BCBA or BCaBA certification, or progress toward certification.
  • Experience with culturally responsive practices and serving diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated expertise in restorative justice and trauma‑informed instructional strategies.
  • Proficiency in multilingual communication, particularly Spanish, to support families with limited English proficiency.
  • Previous involvement in district‑wide PBIS implementation or similar school‑wide initiatives.

Core Skills & Competencies – Tools For Everyday Excellence

  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to dissect behavioral data, identify patterns, and craft responsive interventions.
  • Empathy & Patience: A genuine caring attitude toward students, families, and staff, coupled with the patience required for long‑term behavior change.
  • Collaboration: Strong team orientation, fostering partnerships across teaching staff, administration, and community resources.
  • Leadership: Capacity to mentor other educators, lead professional development sessions, and champion a positive school climate.
  • Adaptability: Comfort with shifting between remote and on‑site responsibilities, managing competing priorities, and navigating changing student needs.
  • Technology Integration: Skillful use of learning management systems, digital data collection tools, and virtual communication platforms.

Career Growth & Professional Development – Your Path Forward

Summit Academy North is dedicated to nurturing talent. As a Behavior Intervention Specialist, you will have access to a continuum of growth opportunities, including:

  • Mentorship Programs: Pairing with seasoned special‑education leaders for guided career advancement.
  • Funding for Advanced Certifications: Tuition reimbursement for pursuit of BCBA, advanced degrees, or specialized workshops.
  • Leadership Tracks: Pathways toward roles such as Lead Behavior Specialist, Director of Student Services, or District‑wide PBIS Coordinator.
  • Conference Attendance: Support for attendance at national conferences (e.g., Council for Exceptional Children, ABAI) to stay current on research and best practices.
  • Collaborative Research: Opportunities to participate in applied research projects that influence policy and practice within Wayne RESA.

Work Environment & Culture – Where You’ll Thrive

Our campus is more than a building; it’s a community built on respect, innovation, and shared purpose. As part of our team you will experience:

  • Inclusive Atmosphere: A diverse staff that values each voice and promotes equity for all students.
  • Collaborative Spaces: Open‑plan work areas, flexible meeting rooms, and quiet zones designed for focused planning and virtual collaboration.
  • Well‑Being Initiatives: Access to wellness programs, mental‑health resources, and regular staff appreciation events.
  • Technology‑Rich Environment: State‑of‑the‑art educational technology that supports both remote and on‑site work.
  • Family‑Friendly Policies: Paid parental leave, flexible scheduling, and a supportive approach to work‑life balance.

Compensation, Perks & Benefits – Investing in You

While exact salary ranges will be discussed during the interview process, successful candidates can expect a highly competitive compensation package that reflects experience and qualifications. Benefits include:

  • Health Coverage: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans with low employee contributions.
  • Retirement Savings: 2% employer contribution to a 401(k) plan, with options for additional employee contributions.
  • Life & Disability Protection: Fully employer‑paid life insurance, accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D), and short‑term disability coverage.
  • Paid Time Off: Generous vacation, sick leave, and personal days, plus holidays aligned with the academic calendar.
  • Professional Development Funds: Annual budget for courses, certifications, and conference attendance.
  • Transportation & Technology Stipends: Support for commuting expenses and home‑office equipment to ensure seamless hybrid work.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP): Confidential counseling services for personal or professional challenges.
