Why Join Alaska Teacher Placement?

At Alaska Teacher Placement, we are dedicated to bridging language gaps and empowering students across the Last Frontier. Our mission is to provide high‑quality, culturally responsive education that equips English Language Learners (ELL) with the confidence and skills they need to thrive academically and socially. As remote work continues to reshape the education landscape, we are proud to offer flexible, work‑from‑home opportunities that enable passionate educators to make a meaningful impact from anywhere in the United States.

Position Overview

The Remote English Language Learners (ELL) Tutor will partner with classroom teachers to deliver targeted, one‑on‑one or small‑group instruction for students who are non‑English speaking or have limited English proficiency (LEP). This role is essential in helping students understand core curriculum concepts, develop conversational fluency, and build academic confidence. Successful candidates will receive a competitive hourly wage ranging from $16.54 to $17.46, with a performance‑based increase of 2 % once Alaska Title I paraprofessional qualifications are met.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized or small‑group tutoring sessions that align with each student’s language proficiency level and academic goals.
  • Design and implement customized tutorial plans, incorporating best‑practice ESL methodologies, technology tools, and culturally relevant materials.
  • Collaborate closely with classroom teachers to identify students in need of extra support, share assessment data, and co‑create learning objectives.
  • Complete all required English Language Learners Program identification and assessment reports with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Maintain meticulous attendance, progress, and program records for each tutored student, ensuring compliance with district and state reporting standards.
  • Serve as a liaison and, when needed, interpreter/translator between teachers, students, and families, fostering clear communication across language barriers.
  • Participate in regular professional development sessions, workshops, and in‑service training to stay current on ESL research, instructional technology, and multicultural best practices.
  • Promote multicultural awareness by introducing LEP students and staff to resources and strategies that celebrate linguistic diversity.
  • Attend scheduled conferences with parents, administrators, and support staff to discuss student progress, set goals, and adjust instructional plans.
  • Assist students in acquiring appropriate learning materials, such as bilingual dictionaries, audio‑visual resources, and interactive language apps.

Essential Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who meet the following baseline requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED acceptable).
  • Within 45 days of hire, acquire Alaska paraprofessional status through one of the following pathways:
    • Completion of 48 semester credits at a regionally accredited college or university, or
    • Score of 459 or higher on the ETS Paraprofessional Assessment, or
    • Pass the WorkKeys by ACT assessment, or
    • Successful completion of the ASD‑provided Master Teacher paraprofessional training program.
  • Demonstrated organizational and record‑keeping abilities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with a focus on customer service and professionalism.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and to inspire confidence among students, families, and staff.
  • Proven capability to build and maintain positive, collaborative relationships across diverse stakeholder groups.

Preferred Qualifications & Additional Assets

  • Formal training in ESL/ESL‑II or certification such as TESOL, CELTA, or state‑approved ESL credentials.
  • Experience designing and delivering virtual instruction using platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams.
  • Familiarity with assessment tools such as WIDA, ACCESS, or state‑specific language proficiency tests.
