Introduction to Community Solutions and Our Mission

Community Solutions is a pioneering non-profit organization dedicated to achieving a lasting end to homelessness, ensuring that no individual is left behind. Since 2015, we have been at the forefront of the Built for Zero movement, a collective effort of over 100 cities and counties leveraging data to revolutionize their approach to homelessness. Our vision is of a future where homelessness is rare, brief, and never inevitable. We are committed to testing and implementing strategies that address gaps in housing, disrupt the inflow into homelessness, and foster more racially equitable housing and homelessness systems.

About the Position: Data Analyst for Community Solutions

We are seeking an experienced, self-motivated, and organized Data Analyst to join our Built for Zero team. This role is crucial in using data and technology to deliver actionable insights to our internal staff and the communities within the Built for Zero movement. As a core member of the Products team, you will provide support through data analysis and technology, contributing to the development of a cohesive, high-functioning data ecosystem. Your work will be pivotal in ensuring our tools are accessible, designed with the user in mind, and ready to scale to support more communities and projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and Improvement of Data Systems: Support the continuous improvement and design of data systems that empower Community Solutions, communities, and partners to analyze data, track performance, and drive improvement.
  • Data Collection and Validation: Develop and implement new data collection and validation processes, automate data analysis and integration, and improve data extraction tools to reduce the workload for communities accessing their data.
  • Training and Support: Co-develop and share clear training materials and processes for communities, partners, and internal staff to ensure seamless adoption and use of our data systems.
  • Infrastructure Design and Functionality: Iterate on data infrastructure design and functionality, regularly revising data and performance management products based on the evolving needs of end-users.
  • Innovation and Problem-Solving: Design new tools, web apps, and visualizations to solve emerging measurement challenges and provide strategic and implementation support for internal data challenges.

Essential Qualifications and Skills

To excel in this role, you should possess a strong ability to think critically and engage with complex challenges and datasets. While a college degree is not a requirement, enthusiasm for learning new software, systems, and processes is essential. Key qualifications include:

  • Experience with Data Analysis and Visualization: Proficiency in using data for process improvement and communicating insights through technology (SQL reports, Python scripts, PowerBI dashboards, etc.).
  • Technical Skills: Familiarity with at least one scripting/programming language or data prep tool (Python, Javascript, R, SQL, SAS, etc.) and experience with business intelligence tools like Tableau.
  • Project Management: Strong project management skills, with the ability to lead projects to successful and measurable completion.
  • Passion for Social Impact: A genuine passion for justice, equity, and ending homelessness, with the belief that it is possible.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, with a willingness to shift between responsibilities and demonstrate strong communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Content Knowledge: Deep knowledge in areas such as housing and homelessness policy, data visualization, statistics, UX/UI design, software development, system administration, and facilitating requirements gathering is highly valued.
  • Experience with Homeless Services: Familiarity with homeless services and direct experience with poverty, homelessness, and their root causes is a plus.
  • Technical Expertise: Experience with Salesforce, PostgreSQL, Metabase, and other relevant software and tools is advantageous.
