Job Overview
We're seeking a passionate and driven Supported Education Counselor to join our Community Links team. In this critical role, you'll provide innovative Wellness & Recovery Supported Education services to young and older adults across New York City. Your primary focus will be to assist individuals in achieving their educational aspirations through personalized support services, helping them overcome the disruptions caused by significant mental health challenges.
Our program is designed to aid participants in identifying their educational needs aligned with their vocational goals, while connecting them with essential resources. With a strong emphasis on supportive peer relationships, you'll collaborate with individuals to identify their strengths, obstacles, and available resources. Services will be delivered through various formats, including in-person, mobile community-based, and remote telehealth methods, prioritizing one-on-one support.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate academic and vocational education readiness planning services to create measurable pathways toward educational goals that enhance self-sufficiency and community interconnectedness.
- Collaborate with students and program participants to develop individualized, person-centered, strength-based Education Goal Plans.
- Foster relationships with educational institutions and supportive resources to expand networks and improve educational support mechanisms.
- Act as a liaison among individuals, educational institutions, and community organizations, coordinating resources and activities related to academic advancement, including internships.
- Conduct outreach and intake processes, ensure meticulous maintenance of client records, and support program activities.
- Facilitate workshops on school readiness and deliver individualized counseling, aiding in admissions and financial aid applications.
- Lead group meetings, workshops, and training sessions, sharing personal recovery experiences to inspire and motivate participants.
- Assist clients with educational assessments, coaching, advocacy, and follow-up services to establish and pursue vocational and educational objectives.
Qualifications and Requirements
To excel in this role, you'll need:
- Experience in Employment or Education Counseling, or Vocational Rehabilitation, particularly within behavioral health environments.
- Specialized expertise in Educational Development, Assessment, and Retention services.
- Capacity to autonomously make informed decisions that influence educational outcomes.
- Proficiency in essential computer skills, including MS Office applications and online research.
- A Bachelor's degree, preferably in Education.
- Experience as a Peer Advocate or in a similar role is an asset.
