About the Inspiring Start Program

The Inspiring Start Program at Monroe Community College is designed to provide academic support and coaching to students who are at high risk of dropping out. The program focuses on helping students succeed in their academic journey by providing them with the necessary tools, resources, and guidance. As a Student Advocate, you will be an integral part of this program, working closely with students, faculty, and staff to ensure that students receive the support they need to succeed.

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and organized Part-time Student Advocate to serve as a case manager for students enrolled in the Strong Foundations and Pathways to MCC programs. The successful candidate will provide academic coaching, advisement, and support to help students achieve their academic goals, particularly those who are at high risk of dropping out. This is a fully remote role, offering flexibility to work from anywhere, with a competitive salary and opportunities for professional growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Student Recruitment and Onboarding: Assist in recruitment and orientation events for new students, conduct intake of applicants, and help students through the placement and registration processes.
  • Academic Coaching and Advisement: Provide case management support and coaching to students, advise students on academic and non-cognitive needs, and conduct and coordinate workshops as necessary.
  • Progress Tracking and Reporting: Track student progress towards goal achievement, maintain a caseload of students, and report on the persistence, retention, and completion objectives of students in the programs.
  • Community and Campus Resource Connection: Refer students to community resources and connect them to on-campus resources, ensuring that students receive the support they need to succeed.
  • Faculty Communication and Collaboration: Communicate with faculty to coordinate interventions for academics, behaviors, and attendance, and meet weekly with faculty to discuss student progress.
  • Administrative Tasks: Perform administrative tasks, including data entry, record-keeping, and reporting, using administrative software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Requirements

  • Earned Bachelor's Degree: Earned Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology/counseling, education, or a related field.
  • Experience Advising or Counseling: Experience advising or counseling underrepresented students, preferably in a higher education institution.
  • Administrative Software Competence: Competence with administrative software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Adaptability and Flexibility: Adept at learning new technologies and working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Higher Education Experience: Experience working in a higher education institution, preferably with underrepresented students.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master of Social Work or Licensed Counselor: Master of Social Work or licensed counselor.
  • Two Years of Advising or Counseling Experience: Two years of advising or counseling experience with underprepared students.
  • Trauma-Informed Practices: Understanding of trauma-informed practices and their application in academic settings.
  • Demonstrated Knowledge of SIS, LMS, and Degree Audit Systems: Demonstrated knowledge or proficiency with SIS, LMS, early intervention, and/or degree audit systems.
  • Bilingual or Multilingual: Bilingual or multilingual, with the ability to read, write, and speak Spanish or other languages proficiently.
