Job Overview

As an Alaska Native Cultural Paraeducator, you will have the opportunity to work closely with students, teachers, and parents to provide academic tutoring, cultural guidance, and emotional support. Your expertise and knowledge of Alaska Native culture, traditions, and language will be invaluable in helping students navigate the educational system and achieve their full potential. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide academic tutoring in basic skills to targeted Alaska Native students, focusing on areas such as reading, writing, and mathematics
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records, including attendance, discipline, and academic progress data
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to develop and implement instructional strategies that meet the unique needs of Alaska Native students
  • Present and instruct students on various subjects, incorporating Alaska Native cultural perspectives and traditions into the curriculum
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, teachers, and administrators to ensure a supportive and inclusive learning environment
  • Stay up-to-date with state and federal programs pertaining to Alaska Native students, as well as higher education programs and sources of funds for Alaska Natives

Essential Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need to possess a combination of education, experience, and skills that demonstrate your ability to work effectively with Alaska Native students and communities. The minimum qualifications for this position include:

  • Knowledge of methods and practices of instructional assistance, as well as Alaska Native and/or American Indian culture
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, operate a personal computer and related software, and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • High school diploma or equivalent, with two years of prior clerical or instructional assistance experience preferred
  • Knowledge of Alaska Native language and traditions preferred, as well as a valid Alaska driver's license
  • Must have either an AA degree, 48 semester hours, or be willing to take and pass the Highly Qualified Paraprofessional Exam

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications are highly desirable and will be considered an asset in your application:

  • Experience working with Alaska Native students and communities, particularly in an educational setting
  • Knowledge of state and federal programs pertaining to Alaska Native students, as well as higher education programs and sources of funds for Alaska Natives
  • Ability to speak an Alaska Native language and participate in cultural activities and events
  • Experience with record-keeping and data management, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office and other software applications
