We're on the hunt for a highly skilled and results-driven Senior Photo Editor to drive our live ESPN news coverage and journalism efforts. About the Role and ESPN Creative Studio

The Visual Storytelling division of ESPN Creative Studio is a talented team of concept artists, animators, visual journalists, photo editors, developers, and designers. Together, you create captivating on-air motion graphics, editorial designs, and photography that reach across all ESPN platforms, including live events, studio shows, ESPN+ original content, and streaming services. As a Senior Photo Editor, you'll play a crucial role in visually enhancing breaking-news stories, leveraging your editorial expertise, strong communication skills, and analytical data to make a lasting impact on fans and the sports industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead live news coverage efforts for ESPN.com and the ESPN app, collaborating with editorial and audience engagement teams to deliver high-quality content.
  • Supplement existing ESPN content and strategy through live sports photography and photo research, ensuring a visually engaging narrative.
  • Exercise sound editorial judgment and situational awareness to meet tight deadlines, drawing on your extensive experience in journalism or a related field.
  • Communicate effectively with story editors and sports fans, leveraging your in-depth knowledge of current and trending sports stories.
  • Demonstrate a deep passion and understanding of major sports, their rules, teams, players, and history, appreciating the impact of sports storytelling on fans and aspiring athletes.
  • Identify valuable breaking-news stories and enhance them visually, working under pressure to deliver creative and impactful content.
  • Lead a team when needed, providing clear and direct verbal and written communication to ensure seamless collaboration.
  • Independently problem-solve in real-time, adapting to changing situations and priorities.
  • Understand and implement ESPN editorial standards and guidelines, maintaining the highest quality and consistency across all visual content.

  • Coordinate coverage for content preparation, preview, and live event coverage, working closely with photographers and other stakeholders.
  • Direct and ensure consistent quality and style across all visual content produced by photo editors, maintaining high standards of accuracy and efficiency.
  • Assign and onboard freelance news and documentary photographers, negotiating rights and rates, and processing invoices and payments.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies in sports photography, photo editing, and news storytelling, continually developing your skills and expertise.

Essential Qualifications and Skills

To succeed in this role, you'll need:

  • A minimum of 7 years of professional experience in journalism or a related field, with a strong background in live news coverage and editorial partnerships.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Photo Mechanic, and other standard photo editing tools, with a solid understanding of digital photography best practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders.
  • A reliable work-from-home setup with a stable internet connection, ensuring seamless remote work.
  • Understanding of copyright laws and photo licensing standards, with a keen eye for detail and accuracy.

As a Senior Photo Editor at ESPN Creative Studio, you'll enjoy a competitive salary ranging from $82,742 to $124,410 per year, depending on your geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. You'll also be eligible for a bonus and/or long-term incentive units as part of our comprehensive compensation package.
