Department Profile: Library and Student Computer Lab
The Cerritos College student computer lab is an integral part of the library, where faculty and staff collaborate to support students in achieving their academic goals. Our state-of-the-art facilities feature 140 public access computers, additional computers in the library instruction lab and reference area, printers, copiers, and laptops available for checkout. We also provide assistive equipment and software to ensure equal access for all students.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor security and student access to computer applications, taking action on misuse of access privileges.
- Troubleshoot computer workstations and peripheral equipment, integrating into existing network environments.
- Assist faculty members and students in the proper use of instructional computing facilities.
- Establish and maintain student user accounts and profiles, implementing access controls and privileges.
- Provide support for a wide variety of subjects and course-specific software on Windows and Mac platforms.
- Oversee and support independent study labs, checking out/in materials and monitoring their whereabouts.
- Analyze workstation problems, making basic corrective measures and referring complex issues to centralized technical support.
- Participate in installing, configuring, and maintaining specialized software, ensuring compatibility with the current operating environment.
- Configure software to communicate with peripherals, such as printers and scanners.
- Assist students and other users with diverse levels of ability and from multiple academic disciplines.
- Inspect lab computers for necessary repairs and maintenance, making basic repairs or arrangements for servicing.
- Maintain records of student and faculty attendance in labs, initiating orders for computer and instructional supplies as authorized.
- Develop, recommend, and implement approved policies and procedures governing lab operations.
- Oversee and provide scheduling, training, and staffing of student workers.
Essential Qualifications
To be considered for this role, you must possess:
- An Associate's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.
- A minimum of 1 year of experience with personal computer technical support or instruction support.
- Working technical knowledge of personal computer workstations, business and education support software, and terminology.
- Understanding of protocols and procedures for setting up new equipment, troubleshooting, and performing routine maintenance.
- Basic understanding of personal computer-based local area networks, data communications, and connectivity.
- Sufficient human relation skills to conduct individual instruction and technical assistance.
- Ability to set up, install, configure, and maintain microcomputer workstations and peripheral equipment.
- Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair computer hardware and software.
Preferred Qualifications
To stand out as a candidate, you should have:
- Three years of full-time, paid experience in a public, school, or college computer lab with 30+ workstations.
- Experience overseeing day-to-day operations and assisting students in the use of standard software applications, learning management systems, and computer equipment.
