Job Highlights and Overview
We are seeking an experienced and passionate Academic Counselor HEOP to join our team in supporting the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program. As an Academic Counselor HEOP, you will play a vital role in teaching, advising, and mentoring students, providing them with the necessary tools and guidance to achieve academic success and reach their full potential. Key Responsibilities
- Student Mentoring and Counseling: Serve as a student mentor and conduct regular academic counseling sessions to address courses, academic progress, and personal, financial, and social concerns.
- Instruction and Workshop Development: Provide individual and group instruction on successful study strategies, peer study groups, and maintaining motivation and focus, and develop workshops and classes focusing on academic success for the freshman population.
- Leadership Development: Design and conduct leadership classes during the HEOP summer program, emphasizing learning as a lifelong pursuit.
- Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Offer training and facilitate discussions on issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, particularly as they pertain to the demographic profile of HEOP students.
- University Committees and Initiatives: Participate in university committees and initiatives as needed, contributing to the overall mission and goals of the institution.
- Supplemental Functions: Support the functions of the Student Success Center as needed, ensuring a comprehensive and integrated approach to student support.
Essential Qualifications
To be considered for this role, you must possess a Bachelor's Degree and be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship. Preferred qualifications include 1-2 years of experience in student leadership, mentorship, advising, or tutoring, with experience gained while enrolled in college eligible for consideration. A Driver's License recognized in NY State and the ability to transport students using University vehicles are also preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Higher Education Knowledge: Familiarity with the goals, objectives, and guidelines related to HEOP and higher education in general.
- Academic Success Strategies: Knowledge of effective academic success strategies in areas such as college reading and writing, quantitative reasoning, information literacy, critical thinking, independent learning, time management, and study skills.
- Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Ability to advocate for students from diverse backgrounds, recognize and respond to the needs of underrepresented and historically marginalized students, and incorporate topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion into areas of responsibility.
- Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate and support the mission and values of St. Bonaventure University.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, particularly Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint, as well as the ability to stay current with emerging office technologies.

Compensation, Perks, and Benefits
We offer a competitive salary range of $35,000 - $39,700 per year, as well as an exceptional benefits package that includes:
