About the Position
This is a permanent, full-time position located at Dyess Air Force Base, approximately 7 miles southwest of downtown Abilene, Texas. As a Veterinary Medical Officer, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality veterinary medical care, surgical care, and treatment to Military Working Dogs and other government-owned animals. You will also serve as the supervisor of the clinic and provide guidance and mentorship to other administrative staff and technicians.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide veterinary medical care, surgical care, and treatment to Military Working Dogs and other government-owned animals.
 - Examine, vaccinate, and treat animals within the scope of veterinary service guidelines.
 - Perform emergency treatment and/or necropsy procedures as necessary.
 - Maintain accurate and detailed medical treatment records and document findings in legible animal health records.
 - Interpret laboratory, radiological, and diagnostic procedures.
 - Conduct commercial sanitation audits of food facilities as assigned, which may require local or occasional overnight travel.
 - Support the installation with animal bite quarantine exams, animal facility checks, and other tasks as requested.
 - Act as supervisor of the clinic and serve as the first-line supervisor for other administrative staff or technicians.
 - Mentor, teach, and coach subordinates to ensure the delivery of safe and effective medical care.
 
Requirements and Qualifications
To be eligible for this position, you must meet the following requirements:
- Possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree from a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education (AVMA).
 - Meet the specialized experience requirements, which include providing veterinary medical treatment to animals, typically at the GS-11 level.
 - Possess a current, active, valid, and unrestricted license as a Veterinarian in a state, the District of Columbia, or a territory of the United States.
 - Be a U.S. citizen.
 - Be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
 
Preferred qualifications include:
- Completion of a Master's degree or higher in a relevant field, such as animal science, avian medicine, or veterinary clinical sciences.
 - Successful completion of a residency or post-graduate training program in a relevant discipline.
 - Experience working with Military Working Dogs or other government-owned animals.
