Local Freight Driver
Job Summary of Local Freight Driver:
The main function of this position is to move cargo between Service Centers and clients and provide assistance in the sales process. This job description is not an all-inclusive list of necessary qualifications, responsibilities, and duties.
Responsibilities of Local Freight Driver:
• Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies, including but not limited to: pallets, straps and rope
• Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary
• Verify and complete required documentation and reports
• Comply with hazardous material regulations and procedures
• Collect cash or checks for freight charges, as required, and maintain required documentation
• Follow dispatch instructions and communicate with dispatch as required, including but not limited to: delays, arrivals and equipment problems
• Communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs and solicit additional business
• Demonstrate internal and external customer service
• Ask for additional business from customers, and provide leads to sales for potential new opportunities
• May be required to perform chaining of vehicle tires
• May be required to perform job duties of a road driver or a dock employee where operationally necessary
• Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures
• Perform other duties as required
• Operate tractor-trailer combination, including doubles (and triples, where applicable) and/or straight trucks
• Perform daily pre-trip and safety inspections on equipment
• Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer
Qualification of Local Freight Driver:
• The possession of a CDL Class A license with double/triple, hazardous materials and tanks endorsements is mandatory for this job.
• The regulation which limits drivers who hold a CDL to manual transmission trucks has been revised, allowing for automatic transmission vehicles.
• In order to apply, candidates need to have completed the FedEx Freight Driver Development Course or worked in a relevant role for at least one year within the past three years
• The hiring standards mandate possession of a suitable MVR
• Section 391 of the FMC regulations is an imperative part of the DOT guidelines required to be met when operating any vehicle.
• Drivers in Certain States Need LCV Qualification and Certification
• Capacity for numerical calculations and simple math is a proficiency that can be carried out using a device or without one
• Communication prowess is a fundamental skill that everyone should possess, particularly in terms of verbal and written communication for documentation, interactions with peers and superiors, and other purposes
• Possessing the strength and endurance to carry hand freight weighing up to 100 pounds multiple times per week.
• Competence to sit for extended durations, bend, turn, stoop, ascend, and descend from the truck
• Being able to comply with instructions and complete necessary training is an essential quality for success in any career
Work Condition of Local Freight Driver:
• Face exposure to dust and exhaust fumes while driving.
